Oh Heeeeeyyyyyyyy

Where to get started? When I was in 6th grade I fell in love with storytelling. Reading Lord of the Rings for the first time I started to become interested in the story telling technique and how artists are able to mold and create characters that we can care for and relate to. I was also interested in how artists are able to build themes that we can relate to and are relevant to modern society. I started to watch and read critics to see what were the best films of today. Then I started to get interested with my own thoughts on the films made today and how they matched up with the consensus thoughts of the film critics of today. Ever since then I started to rate each movie I saw and found that not only was this fun for me, but it put onto paper my own thoughts of cinema today

After much encouragement from friends I have decided to start a blog to document my thoughts on film. I don’t know who will read this or who will want to read this but my hope is that people will find this site useful in creating discussion about film and other media types that I choose to write about. In writing opinions about films I like to rate them like many other critics out there. For films, I like to rate them in a plus and minus grading scale. For example here are my ratings for the films I saw in 2010:

127 Hours – A-

Black Swan – A+

Dogtooth – A-

Exit Through the Gift Shop – B+

The Fighter – A-

The Ghost Writer – B

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 – B+

How to Train a Dragon – A-

The Illusionist – B+

Inception – A+

Inside Job – A-

The King’s Speech – A-

Let Me In – A-

Never Let Me Go – A

Restrepo – A-

The Social Network – A

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – B

Shutter Island – B

The Town – B

Toy Story 3 – A

True Grit – B

Waiting for Superman – A-

Winter’s Bone – B+

(If you wanna be rottentomatoes about this, anything that is C+ or above is a fresh rating and anything that is C- or below is a rotten rating. A C grade means I really don’t know if I could place the film as being fresh or rotten, a neutral rating.)

For music I like to use the pitchfork rating system and for an example of this here are my ratings for the albums I have listened to in 2010:

High Violet by The National – 9.6/10

Teen Dream by Beach House – 9.4/10

Gorilla Manor by Local Natives – 9.3/10

Age of Adz by Sufjan Stevens – 9.2/10

Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter – 9.1/10

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire – 8.9/10

Man on the Moon: The Legend of Mr. Rager by Kid Cudi – 8.7/10

Brothers by The Black Keys – 8.6/10

Contra by Vampire Weekend – 8.4/10

Congratulations by MGMT – 7.8/10

Come Around Sundown – Kings of Leon – 6.8/10

This is Happening by LCD Soundsystem – 6.7/10

The Wild Trapeze by Brandon Boyd – 6.5/10

Interpol by Interpol – 6.2/10

To the Sea by Jack Johnson – 5.2/10

Commitment by Seal – 3.8/10

For books I haven’t decided yet and when I get done with my first book of the summer, The Fountainhead, I will think of some unique ways to rate them.

I hope that some people will find this blog entertaining and enjoy reading this and hope must of all that it sparks conversation about the world of film and the movies that will become the definitive films of our time.
