In celebration of the newest season of Game of Thrones, I give you my list of my favorite characters from the show and the book series that it is based on. I have just finished the books (A Song of Ice and Fire) but I promise not to spoil anything past what has happened on the show. But be warned if you have not caught up on the show because I do touch on some plot points in the first two seasons of A Game of Thrones. So enjoy this list and get ready for what looks to be the best season of Game of Thrones yet.
10. Ser Jorah Mormont
A exiled knight whose motives aren’t clear till late in the series, Jorah is a torn individual and he gains depth as you read or watch on. His love for Dany is obvious and I wonder if he will ever be able to woo the mother of dragons or accept her feelings towards him.
9. Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger)
Always scheming, Littlefinger has a huge part in almost all that has happened in the series so far. He is a character that is out for his own gain even if he is not as evil as some of the other characters. I don’t condone all that he has done but I don’t hate him. He deals with plots and secrets better than most and the outcome always seems to go in his favor.
8. Catelyn Stark
If Ned is the perfect father than Cat Stark is the perfect mother (even if she is a less then ideal step mom.) She loves her children and it is heartbreaking to see her deal with her two youngest (supposed) deaths. I say this many times but for those that haven’t read the books, just wait to see where her character goes. Two words, Lady Stoneheart.
7. Arya Stark
Arya is up there with Jon Snow as my favorite Stark children. Her story goes in a lot of weird directions but she is a girl that is rapidly turning into a cold stone assassin. You root for her even if you don’t know where her tale will lead. Some say she is the hero of Martian’s Magnum Opus but I believe she is just a character out there to prove herself and right the wrongs done against her family.
6. Davos Seaworth
When you finish the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire it is hard to feel like you’ll ever met another Ned Stark again. You won’t but Davos is as close as you’re likely going to come. A loyal man and one who serves his king without losing his sense of morality, he is a B version of good ol Ned and a character that I hope never sees a premature demise.
5. Eddard Stark
It is crazy how a character that lasted only one book (or one season) can still strike a cord latter on in the series. Ned’s untimely death shocked readers and viewers alike but that hasn’t stopped the character from his honor and respectability. He is the ideal character in Martian’s world and his name still carries. He is the most honorable man in this tale and one that reminds us that the world of Westeros is just as brutal as our own.
4. Lord Varys (The Spider)
Like Littlefinger, Varys is a character that works in the shadows. His allegiance is a mystery until the end of A Dance With Dragons. But it is fun to see him get attached to Tyrion during the course of the third book as he unveils many secrets while still harboring his own intentions. Varys is one the best-written characters in the series and somebody that wields more than just swords to get what he wants.
3. Jaime Lannister (Kingslayer)
I said no spoilers so I won’t talk much about where Jaime Lannister goes after he and Brienne set off to get Sansa and Arya back but his character is fleshed out considerable in the last three books. He is still a very grey character but Jaime grows in front of our eyes. He is an emotional charged character later in the series as he starts to discover something about himself that he finds troubling, he has a conscience.
2. Jon Snow
Jon Snow is our gateway to the world of the Wall, which protects the world from the harsh wild of the North. He is a boy that was born from sin but he is able to overcoming one of his father’s few mistakes. Actually out of all the Stark kids he is the one closest to the demeanor of Ned Stark. He is probably the most popular character in the series and show as he is one of the few people in Westeros that is consistently trying to do right. Even if he is separated from the political intrigue of the south, his chapters are some of the best of the whole series.
1. Tyrion Lannister
Yea I hate to be clichéd but you can’t beat everyone’s favorite imp. He is a character that has taken his own personal defects as his own and built himself on his own smarts and humor. He is a character that isn’t perfect and his own loose morality can frustrate at times but he has a heart and that is why he is one of the more likeable characters around. Peter Dinklage was perfectly cast and brings life to a character that has bloomed on page. You never groan when his chapters come up and you cheer him own when he has to use all he has to survive the game of thrones.
As an extra bonus here is a list of some of the characters that I hope see a terrible and painful death.
Characters I Hate the Most
5. Roose Bolton
I don’t want to give away too much but this is a character that has a lot in common with Littlefinger and Varys. He is cunning and out for his own gain but he gets his way by killing all that he has too. Look for this character to be fleshed out over the course of Season 3 of Game of Thrones.
4. House Frey
I hope they all burn.
3. Gregor Clegane (The Moutain that Rides)
Think of the Mountain as a man after General Kurtz’s own heart (the horror). He is ruthless and down right despicable. The books paint him as a more horrible character as he enjoys torturing, raping, and killing his victims. Man, I hate this dude.
2. King Joffrey Baratheon
How can you hate a child? Well it’s easy when you have such a little punk kid as the ruler of the seven kingdoms. We all didn’t like his cocky attitude when we first met him but that distain turned to hate when he ordered the execution of Ned Stark. One of Martian’s biggest accomplishments is that he makes people hate a child. I can’t wait till Joffery gets what’s coming to him but you never know. Joffery may have the last laugh at the end.
1. Ramsey Snow
If you haven’t read the books you are probably thinking to yourself how anyone can hate someone more than King Joffery. The answer is that you haven’t met this character yet. You’ve heard about him in the show but his mentions are concealed by a false identity but don’t worry you will meet him and once you do, you’ll wish you hadn’t.
